SAINT TEXTILE: Dual-Use Technology and Advanced Textile Innovation for Life-Saving Missions

The SAINT TEXTILE project (SAVINg lives with smarT TEXTILEs in hostile environment) represents the flagship initiative of Proteggi Italia S.r.l.—the pinnacle of our vision where cutting-edge textile engineering converges with scientific research and the operational requirements of defense and civil safety.

Engineered as an advanced technological response for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations at sea and in zero- or low-visibility environments, SAINT TEXTILE transforms personal protective equipment from passive gear into active, intelligent systems designed to save lives.

An Elite Institutional Collaboration

The excellence of SAINT TEXTILE stems from a synergistic partnership bringing together military operations, academic research, and industrial manufacturing:

  • National Armaments Directorate (DNA) / Italian Ministry of Defense: Strategic direction and coordination under the National Military Research Program (PNRM) and the Directorate of Aeronautical Armaments and Airworthiness (DAAA).
  • Sapienza University of Rome: Scientific development led by the Department of Basic and Applied Sciences for Engineering (SBAI), a leader in metamaterials, infrared photonics, and the thermodynamics of exothermic reactions.
  • 15th Wing of the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare): The operational unit specialized in air rescue—with over 7,800 lives saved since its establishment—which, together with the Flight Test Center (Reparto Sperimentale Volo), conducted end-to-end flight tests and simulations to validate the prototypes in real-world scenarios.
  • Proteggi Italia S.r.l.: Engineering, Jacquard weaving, industrial prototyping, and the assembly of waterproofed, marine-corrosion-resistant sensorized textiles.

Technological & Scientific Architecture

The SAINT TEXTILE system was engineered as a multi-layer smart patch or an active life vest that easily retrofits onto existing protective equipment and life jackets:

  1. Infrared (IR) Signature Enhancement: The textile surface is functionalized with Phase Change Materials (PCMs, specifically Vanadium Dioxide and Tungsten) that amplify the survivor's thermal emissivity. This makes adrift individuals distinctly visible to airborne electro-optical sensors, including FLIR thermal cameras (in the 3–5 micron MWIR band) and NVG night-vision goggles (0.63–0.93 microns).
  2. GPS/LoRa Telemetry & Localization: Flame-retardant conductive yarns are woven directly into the fabric to serve as micro-antennas and wiring. Connected to an ESP32-LoRa micro-board, a NEO-M8N GPS module, and a 3.7V LiPo battery, the system transmits long-range, low-power geographical telemetry directly to rescue command centers.

On the Global Stage: Expo 2025 Osaka

The groundbreaking innovation and humanitarian impact of SAINT TEXTILE enabled Proteggi Italia and its partners to showcase Italian technological excellence to a global audience.

Selected by the Italian Ministry of Defense to represent Italy at Expo 2025 Osaka, the project was featured within the core thematic priority "Saving Lives".

On August 5, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Italy Pavilion, a dedicated day was held to officially present the project to international delegations and the public. The event featured flight test footage recorded by the Italian Air Force alongside live demonstrations of the smart patches operating in complete darkness.

Dual-Use Outlook & Industry Impact

Developed within military research frameworks yet driven by a clear dual-use purpose, SAINT TEXTILE sets a new safety benchmark not only for military flight crews, but also for commercial maritime shipping, offshore energy platforms, port operators, and civilian yachting.
